“Cooking classes? I don’t need no class to teach me more than I already know” I hear you say? Well trust me, even I learned a thing or two from professional chef Andrew who was a joy to be around and Catherine who was a warm and welcome host.
Growing up I learned how to fry an egg, boil and egg and of course, scramble an egg. My culinary skills as a child were nominal, as a young adult they upgraded to pasta with pesto from a jar and putting together a burger. It was fair to say cooking wasn’t a skill I possessed.
Going vegan, now about two years ago, I finally started experimenting with food. I was never big on eating veg but got excited for food by actually starting to season my food 🙈
This with help from Jay Brave, my partner with African Caribbean roots, who taught me the basics of seasoning and SALT. I always thought salt was bad for you.
Jenius Social is a lovely small venue space that runs amazing food and drinks events. They have their own in house chefs and experts that run cookery and drinks group events and as well as bespoke private dining.
I was excited to attend their Vegan Cooking Class which was taught by Andrew, an original graduate of Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen restaurant now father of a two year old boy, and he really made this cooking class.
This was the kind of group that shares their lip balm. The kind that asks questions and listens. It was a predominantly a vegan group 😉 now I’m not saying that it made us more compassionate towards others but hey, we were definitely all open minded.
“A nice evening but it would make for a boring Come Dine With Me episode, that we all agreed so much” said Tom who hit the nail on the head. I tried dropping in random things in conversation but with no luck as to stir the pot 😉
The beauty of it being a small and intimate class, six of us in a group, was that we got to know each other. I would say that spell got broken when we were presented with the drinks bill and it got a little awkward.
It is unfortunate the more mainstream veganism goes, the more elitist it feels. Cooking classes are a great way of improving skills for life, it’s a shame at £75 a head + drinks bill, they come at a steep price. This compared to other vegan cooking classes is relatively low. Compared to the Vegetarian Society Cooking School Vegan Toolkit Workshop (£139) or the Avenue Cookery School Vegan Cooking Class (£90) it was actually not that bad in comparison.
