We were planning on going away for our anniversary weekend and were at first stuck with where to go. Go abroad or explore the UK more? Joel took the lead and planned a surprise trip to York. I had never been to Yorkshire and to be fair, the first thing that came to mind was nature and cups of tea. It might have not been the first thing that I wanted as a romantic getaway but it turned out to be the perfect place. I asked on Snapchat where to go and especially where to eat! I got so many responses that it was here that I got inspiration to write this post…
El Piano– I asked on my Snapchat where to eat in York and El Piano came highly recommended. The restaurant offers plant based lunches and dinners, mostly tapas style. The menu is AMAZING and they offer so much choice and flexibility, including gluten free options. Which you can polish of with one of their inventive desserts, we tried the sticky toffee pudding and it was delicous! El Piano also offer a ‘build your own plate’, and I love the Thai Aubergines with rice, falafel and houmous! I begged them to open a London branch as for their food alone I would go up to York and back! Alternatively if you live in York, you can order through Deliveroo.
Goji Café, Deli and Restaurant – Another highly recommended café/restaurant from Snapchat followers is located right near the Minster on Goodramgate. Most of the food at Goji is vegan, and they sell the most tempting vegan cakes and tarts! Offering breakfast and lunch every day of the week, with sometimes special evening events, so look out for those. We had the spicy quinoa and sweet potato burger with sweet potato fries (pictured below).
Double Dutch – There are certain foods that have ‘happy family’ written all over them, and pancakes are one of them. Double Dutch is, as you guess it, a Dutch inspired pancake house, resembeling the stereotypical Netherlands perfectly. I love all the decorations which served as little reminders of home. Unfortunately the staff didn’t speak Dutch, that would have selfishly been a massive plus for someone like me, Dutch living in England. They also have a completely vegan menu! Which makes it extra easy to order and really makes it feel like they thought of including everyone. We had one savoury and one sweet pancake to share.
From left to right: starting off with the savoury pancake to share and then the sweet one to finish (I had most of it as sweet pancakes are my favourite!)
