Best Vegan Pizza in London! Thai Massaman Curry!

written by notetoiris

Vegan pizzas, love em or hate em that is the question. There have been many times I bit into a slice of pizza and thought, no, this is just not good enough. But now with businesses like One Planet Pizza (frozen ready made pizzas), Voodoo Rays (by the slice) and now 400 Rabbits (ready to eat pizzas), I’m in pizza heaven.

We hopped over (walked from Forest Hill) to Crystal Palace to try their vegan special and solid vegan menu. The special is truly special. It had all the elements I like separately somehow married together… Vegan sourdough base, Thai Massaman curry sauce, jackfruit, chickpeas, crushed peanuts, pomegranate seeds, red onion and topped with bits of coriander.

Yes, you heard, all those ingredients and it tasted like a mouth party. The flavours were just right and even Joel liked the salty-sweet combination of the sauce with pomegranate seeds.

We also tried the pickled radish, courgette, garlic and pine nut pesto pumpkin seeds, thyme and San Marzano tomato. The pesto was so nice and flavoursome, incomparable with shop-bought pesto.

400 Rabbits Pizza

Padron peppers starter, salty and delicious.

The gelato didn’t have a vegan option but the blood orange sorbets was wonderful.

400 Rabbits are extending the menu run for the collab with Greedy Khao. The Thai Massaman Curry Sourdough Pizza special is extended to Friday 6th of April!

Also try this making this sweet potato base guilt-free pizza at home! It’s delicious and easy to make, a great gluten-free alternative if you use gluten-free flour. A wholesome nourishing base that I topped with artichoke hearts, sun dried tomatoes, red onion and vegan mozzarella.

written by notetoiris

Deserted Cactus cafe in Peckham

What can I say? The pictures speak for themselves. We have nothing but love for Deserted Cactus in Peckham and the chef behind it all is Esme London Afro Vegan.

As soon as we saw Esme cooked up some southern fried jackfruit our tummies started rumbling and off we were on a bus to Peckham! Deserted Cactus serves up a new dish every day it opens its doors, the surprise and the anticipation is all part of the charm of this little hide away kitchen in Peckham.

A Vegan Twist On Traditional French Cuisine at Aubaine

written by notetoiris

One of the many perks of living in London is the endless options of cafes, brunch spots and dinner plans. This did change a little when we first went vegan, our options became very limited and we stopped going out as we were bored of the bowl of chips with a side salad…

Nowadays we, I must say, are spoiled for choice. Fair enough we don’t have a vegan cafe on every corner but there are vegan options on the high street as well as in supermarket and restaurants. The fact that Aubaine, a traditionally French restaurant in the heart of Mayfair, is providing a full vegan menu means change is here to stay. People often ask me if I’m going with the trend, the mainstream, following a diet to stay slim. It is true that the louder the voices, the more I could no longer keep my head in the sand and deny the unsustainable torture of planet, humans and animals. Following my heart is the best thing I’ve ever done and now also the tastiest 🙂

Aubaine

The Aubaine Veganuary menu was a lovely surprise. The portobello mushroom and black bean burger is one of the best bean burgers I’ve ever had, not dry, great taste and texture.

Couldn’t recommend the raw Peruvian organic chocolate and raspberry brownie enough! Although it is very decadent (I sure didn’t mind as I ate both desserts ?) The raspberry sorbet is fresh and compliments it very well.

Celebrating Veganuary with Comptoir V in Kensal Rise

written by notetoiris

Newly opened early December last year, Comptoir V is a lovely new vegan addition to Kensal Rise. And although we live in South London, we will travel back up North to enjoy that beautiful food.

Comptoir V is being introduced by the owners of nearby Moroccan and Middle Eastern restaurant, Comptoir Mezze , which won the Time Out Award for the Best Restaurant in North-West London. Comptoir V aims to make plant-based eating and drinking exciting for vegans and meat-eaters alike.

We had the pleasure of meeting head chef Michael Ninvalle, a vegan himself, was the proud recipient of a National Award for his work in his home country of Trinidad and Tobago, and has most recently honed his cooking skills at top-rated restaurant, Love Gift Vegan London, which is just around the corner from us in Brockley.

Apple and Mint Mocktail with Dynamite Prawn Cocktail

Accompanying the food will be a selection of biodynamic vegan wines, vegan beers such as Tiny Rebel and Beavertown, and cocktails rich in superfoods. An array of cold-pressed juices, antioxidant rich lattes and freshly ground organic coffee will be on offer alongside the alcoholic tipples. To be honest I drink less and less these days, and it’s always a nice surprise to find a restaurant that caters so well to people who choose not to have a drink.

Ninvalle has taken inspiration from around the world with a particular nod to Middle Eastern flavours to design a vibrant and diverse menu of plant-powered delights including Shakshouka Tagine with Vegan Merguez, Vegan Jerk Burger, and Baked Vegan Parmesan, Harissa Cauliflower Steak and Return of the Mac, topped with mushroom ribs, which was our favourite.

Where to Eat Vegan in York

written by notetoiris

We were planning on going away for our anniversary weekend and were at first stuck with where to go. Go abroad or explore the UK more? Joel took the lead and planned a surprise trip to York. I had never been to Yorkshire and to be fair, the first thing that came to mind was nature and cups of tea. It might have not been the first thing that I wanted as a romantic getaway but it turned out to be the perfect place. I asked on Snapchat where to go and especially where to eat! I got so many responses that it was here that I got inspiration to write this post…

El PianoEl Piano - York

El Piano– I asked on my Snapchat where to eat in York and El Piano came highly recommended. The restaurant offers plant based lunches and dinners, mostly tapas style. The menu is AMAZING and they offer so much choice and flexibility, including gluten free options. Which you can polish of with one of their inventive desserts, we tried the sticky toffee pudding and it was delicous! El Piano also offer a ‘build your own plate’, and I love the Thai Aubergines with rice, falafel and houmous! I begged them to open a London branch as for their food alone I would go up to York and back! Alternatively if you live in York, you can order through Deliveroo.

Goji Cafe - York

Goji Café, Deli and Restaurant – Another highly recommended café/restaurant from Snapchat followers is located right near the Minster on Goodramgate. Most of the food at Goji is vegan, and they sell the most tempting vegan cakes and tarts! Offering breakfast and lunch every day of the week, with sometimes special evening events, so look out for those. We had the spicy quinoa and sweet potato burger with sweet potato fries (pictured below).

Quinoa burger with sweet potato fries - Goji Cafe, York

Double Dutch - York

Double Dutch – There are certain foods that have ‘happy family’ written all over them, and pancakes are one of them. Double Dutch is, as you guess it, a Dutch inspired pancake house, resembeling the stereotypical Netherlands perfectly. I love all the decorations which served as little reminders of home. Unfortunately the staff didn’t speak Dutch, that would have selfishly been a massive plus for someone like me, Dutch living in England. They also have a completely vegan menu! Which makes it extra easy to order and really makes it feel like they thought of including everyone. We had one savoury and one sweet pancake to share.

From left to right: starting off with the savoury pancake to share and then the sweet one to finish (I had most of it as sweet pancakes are my favourite!)

Siblings Are Opening The First Vegan Butcher Shop In The U.S.

written by notetoiris

Below, you’ll find my go-to steel-cut oat cooking method, which I learned from the geniuses at America’s Test Kitchen. The only hard part is deciding what to mix in and how to top your oatmeal.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound dried white beans
  • 1 28-ounce can Tuttorosso Peeled Plum Italian Style Tomatoes, drained, with juices reserved
  • Olive oil, Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper, as needed
  • 2 meaty and smoked ham hocks, about 2 pounds total
  • Zest of half a lemon, removed in strips with a vegetable peeler
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine
  • 1 small head savoy cabbage, cored and cut into strips
  • 1/2 cup flat leaf parsley leaves, roughly chopped
  • 1 cup fresh bread crumbs

Put the following in a spice bag:

  • 1 medium carrot, cut in half
  • 1 medium yellow onion, peeled, halved
  • 1 small head of garlic, unpeeled, cut in half crosswise
  • 1 celery stalk, cut in half
  • 2 dried bay leaves
  • 10 black peppercorns
  • 1 small dried red chili, such as de árbol

Procedures:

1. The day before cooking, pick through the beans and remove any debris. Soak them in a large pot of cold water and cover generously, and let sit for at least 12 hours or overnight. (Otherwise, to quick-soak the beans, put them in a heavy 6-quart pot and add water to cover by about 2 inches. Bring to a boil and then turn the heat off. Let soak for 1 hour.)

2. The day of cooking, season drained Tuttorosso tomatoes with salt, pepper, and 1 tablespoon olive oil in a shallow bowl and let sit for at least 20 minutes. Set aside.

3. Drain the soaked beans and put them in a large pot. Cover the beans with the reserved tomato juice and enough water to submerge them. Add the ham hocks and the spice bag. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and cook for a few minutes while skimming the surface.

4. Reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour or longer, until the beans are nearly tender, adding a little water if necessary so that the beans and the spice bag remain just barely submerged.

5. When the beans are nearly tender, add the lemon zest, the white wine, and 1 tablespoon of salt and continue to simmer until the beans are completely cooked and the remaining liquid is reduced and a little saucy. Adjust the seasoning and discard the spice bag.

6. If the beans are done before the ham hocks are completely tender, transfer the hocks to a small saucepan along with some bean cooking liquid and additional water to cover. Simmer gently until the meat is fork-tender; let the hocks cool in the broth; and then return the broth to the beans. Remove the meat from the bones and return the meat to the beans. Leave in a very low simmer to keep warm.

7. Heat a large, heavy skillet and 2 tablespoons of the oil. Add the cabbage, season well with salt and fresh pepper and sauté over medium high heat for 3 minutes until the cabbage begins to lightly color and is slightly wilted. Do this in batches if necessary to not overcrowd the pan. Roughly chop the marinated Tuttorosso tomatoes and add to the skillet. Continue cooking over medium heat for another 2 minutes until tomatoes soften. Mix in the parsley.

8. Preheat the oven to 350° F. Combine the cabbage and meat mixture with the beans and their thickened broth and transfer to a large shallow casserole dish. Top with breadcrumbs and drizzle with 2 tablespoons of olive oil and bake at 350° F for 35 minutes or until the casserole is very hot throughout and the breadcrumbs are golden brown. Remove from oven and let rest before serving.
